The passion for Italian food can be traced back to the founder, Peter Boizot and his love affair with Italy. Unhappy with the pizza in London, he shipped over a real pizza oven from Naples, knocked down a wall to squeeze it into a small restaurant, and opened very first PizzaExpress on Wardour Street in Soho. Peter Boizot didn’t just break the mould. He knocked down entire walls. He brought great pizza to Great Britain. And a great deal more besides. So he’s not just the founder back then. He’s still the inspiration today.
Ultimately, it’s all about the food. How could it not be? After all, Peter’s love for pizza is where it all began. It’s the same today. Pizza. It’s what they do. Really well. So in their kitchens there are no fryers, no microwaves. Just an oven. Everything on the menu must work around that.
Let me start with the DrinkS which was their signatures and my favorite from now.
Orange, Carrot and Passion fruit Miscelato, done with blended fresh carrot, orange juice, passion fruit and lemon juice.
Pineapple & Berry Prescato, done with blended pineapple juice, maraschino cherry, raspberry puree and lemon juice.
From the Appetizers we tried our hands on the Calamari, which was calamari rings oven baked and served with lemon and mayo pesto sauce. This was so very delicious, crispy and crunchy, juicy and tender. It went perfect with the sauce served.
Spicy Chicken Wings, wings marinated in rosemary, chili oil, garlic and basil. O wow this was so very juicy and tender, delicious and divine. It was happiness in my mouth as every bite was full of flavors and taste.
From the Sides we ordered the Sweet Potato Fries, which was again oven baked strips of sweet potatoes tossed in paprika and served with mayo.
Rocket & Parmesan Salad, done with wild rockets, Parmesan cheese, extra virgin olive oil and balsamic syrup.
Here comes the favorite part Pizza and as advised by Mr. Irshad who knows the menu so well and as I blindly trusted him with the servings it came out to be so delicious and worth.
The Apollo pizza, done with Chicken Tandoori, mozzarella, passata, yellow peppers, green chilies and coriander. The crust was Romana which was a larger, crispier based inspired by Pizza from Rome.
It tasted so delicious and spicy, YES this is for all spice lovers.
FRom the Pasta section we tried the Spaghetti Gamberoni Piccante, done with king prawns with broccoli, dill, garlic and red chili in a spicy cream. O this was the hit of the place, tasted so delicious, it was the perfect combination of flavors with aroma.
From the Desserts I tried the Chocolate Fondant with a melted chocolate orange center. Dusted with icing sugar and served with a scoop of homemade gelato.
Honeycomb Cheesecake, baked cheese on an oaty base, finished with caramel frosting and chocolate covered chunks of honeycomb. Served with raspberry coulis and a scoop of homemade gelato.
Overall it was an amazing experience and I am definitely going back to try the other delicacies from this place.
