Saleem’s of Delhi has earned quite a reputation in the Indian capital, having served up traditionally rich Mughlai dishes to the society’s foodie elite since 1977. Their Dubai branch in Karama is the restaurant’s very first venture out of India, and has been in operation for about a year now. Recently I was invited for the new menu tasting of Saleem’s Of Delhi – ”Purani Delhi Ke Zaike” by JiveWithDeepti. The evening featured a journey of culinary delights from the old streets of Delhi.
The Interiors all decked up with portraits of Saleem and Anarkali, with a Mughal aura to it.On another side walls was the images from Old Delhi historic landmarks and the Red Fort got a nostalgic touch to it. The chandeliers versed up well with the ambiance and the seating all colorful and comfy. It was revisiting my home town Delhi again, a nostalgic and proud feeling for the rich culture and heritage.
Now being a hard core Delhite and living there for ages, the food is never compared to any place outside the town. The Paratha Wali Galli, Chauri Bazaar, Chandni Chowk, Khan Market all had their own specialties with the same Mughlai taste. Overseas its very difficult to find the same taste and delicacies, but to my surprise Saleems of Delhi has stood up with my expectations. So DILLI WALO this is the place for you!!
As we settled down with a smiling face by the host and the manager, we were treated with Papad, Mint Chutney and Cut Onions as a tradition to start ones food. Being a papad lover with the mint chutney my hubby just digged in.
Whenever i get an invite i make sure that the restaurant manager decides what to serve me, as he knows well all his signatures and best sellers.
For refreshment we were served Cucumber Julep, a classic julep with a twist of cucumber and fresh mint.An appealing to the eyes and delicious to the mouth.
From the Non Vegetarian starters we were served :
Badshahi Kalmi Kabab, a delightful preparation of the chicken thighs and spices infused till the last bone.
Bhatti Ka Murgh, special bhatti masala chicken finished with lemon, love the spiciness and the instant taste of the lemon flavored chicken.
Mutton Sheekh Kabab, Saleem’s special kebab mince slow cooked over charcoal, the meat all juicy and fresh, mingling well with the spices.
Now, as expected Mughlai foods though known for their Meaty dishes but their Veg delicacies are always on hit. And it made itself correct by serving the most delicious starters from the veggie section.
Dahi Ke Sholey, lightly spiced deep fried sholey with creamy vegetable filling, an air puff as it went and dissapeared in my mouth.
Kaju Mutter Pudina Tikki, shallow fried patties of pea mint and cashew nut, a trat to oneself. Tender, juicy and delicious.
The Breads were fresh from the kitchen of Saleem’s of Delhi, we were served Butter Naan and Tawa Roti.
Dal Bukhara, slow cooked black lentil in Saleem’s secret spices finished with butter and cream. All creamy, rich and thick, perfectly done and well versed with the breads served. Love the bucket concept which again reminds me of the Galli Dhaba’s of Delhi.
Now this chicken dish was heavenly, the flavor from the smoked cooked from tandoor was fabulous. Tawa Murg, roasted chicken with aromatic saleem garam masala and tomatoes. The smoky flavor was way too luscious and the spices all infused till the last bite. A heavenly treat to oneself!!
I usually avoid Mutton dishes outside, but these placed made me fell in love with it and i am going back again to taste this as it still lingers. Shahi Qorma, traditional mughlai mutton preparation with yoghurt, nuts and selected spices. The meat all juicy, tender and fresh. A delicious and rich taste at Saleem’s of Delhi.
After a delicious treat of the appetizer and mains i knew this place dessert will be the best and i was RIGHT!!.
We were served Shahi Tukda, rich light sweet made with bread and soaked in milk and nuts. The saffron punch to it was instant and plays its trick as it perfectly mingles along the tukdas. The bread all tender and hot.
Kesari Firni, royal rice pudding flavored with saffron. Served in Matkas as well known by Delhites a delicious treat to oneself.
Now as its a tradition to serve refreshment after an Indian cuisine, here it comes by the host.
Overall my Mughlai experience was WOW. If you are looking for a spiced and decked up place to treat yourself well then Saleem’s of Delhi is the right place for you.
