MEKONG – Anantara Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa
The vibrant culinary cultures of Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine at Mekong.Named after South East Asia’s legendary river, Mekong offers a journey infused with rich and flavorful discovery.Indulge in authentic eastern recipes at rickshaw-style seating and oriental tables, or reserve the discreet private dining room which is perfect for intimate celebrations.
I couldn’t take away my eyes from Mekong’s interior designing, the use of bamboo and silk panels, dazzling temple bells and mosaic-papered bathrooms, beautifully melded the three countries.
Following a traditional Thai greeting on entering the hotel, guests wander down among the pretty lit Thai style roofs of the resort to arrive at this intriguingly attractive restaurant.Mekong is flooded with colorful and diverse visual charm. Eclectic aspects of the decor include rickshaw booths outside, towering pillars that look like Chinese vases, silk parasols cluttered together against a wall and wooden shutters overlapped against the ceiling. In addition to a large private dining room, the center of the restaurant houses a dining area where guests sit at large and imposing wooden couches.Their is a large open kitchen at that back where you can watch your meal being prepared. However, it’s the cosy balcony tables-for-two with their unfettered views of Burj Al Arab that really steal the night away.
Servers welcome diners with warm towels and a wooden plate containing all the elements for making betel leaf pouches to start the meal with. The wooden plate included a lil bit of Onions,Chilies,Pieces of Lemon,Nuts etc.It gave a beautiful taste which was a bit sweet, chilly and sour.
As it was pre booked a long time ago to celebrate my 4th Marriage Anniversary i requested for a place cozy and quiet. The perfect place that could be for our special night was shown by the servers. It was a open up Cabin with with Wooden doors supporting it and those beautifully dragon decorated doors just stole my hubby’s eyes away from me.The plates were decorated with love shaped napkins to give us the aura of romance in the air. There was a round table with a beautifully written card for our Anniversary from the Mekong Team.
The Menu consists of 3 cuisines The Thai,Chinese and Vietnamese as both of us are religiously Thai lovers so we just opt for the Thai option. And of course the Server plays a best role for helping us out to select the best dishes for the night.
For Starters we ordered the BBQ Minced Prawns on Sugar Cane Skewers which was served with a capsicum sauce. The prawns were very tender and juicy and i felt that the prawns was mixed like a kebab like taste and the skewers added the sweetness in it on every bite we take.A good choice rather with a different kind of kebab like prawns.
Now as the tradition flows after Starters it has to be The Main Course which was totally my Hubby’s selection (sometimes he can do it really well) which comprised of Thai Chicken Green Curry (Gaeng Kiew Wann Gai) and Stir fried Prawns with Hot Basil (Phad Kraprow Gaeng).
The Thai Chicken Curry was the best with the authentic taste mixed well with Thai green curry paste/Chicken thigh/Thai baby eggplant/Coconut milk and sweet basil leaves. The smell of coconut milk was so very mesmerizing that i just simply loved it.
The Prawns were also the attraction of the night with very little gravy on it but beautifully mixed with hot basil leaves/garlic/chilli and oyster sauce. The combination was perfect with one gravy and the other a bit little gravy. The prawns were very juicy and just the best dish for the evening.
Their was complimentary rice with every main course you order so that’s again the best that come from the team.Their were two kinds of rice The jasmine Rice which we often find in any Thai Dining and the other one was the organic rice The Black rice which was a bit sticky and as asked by me they said that it was the tradition rice of Thailand. The sticky rice was way too good and a perfect combination for the dishes we ordered. You can ask for as many times of rice you want and they are always happy to serve you more. The black rice is a bit heavier so one filling is enough for the night. The Black rice is a must try in Mekong.
Now comes my favorite part The Dessert which i always choose very carefully so that my whole night out gets the 100 point in it.It was a Caramel Palm Sugar & Pandan Creame Brulee which was Coconut Ice Cream served with a very thick cream of pandan leaves/Sugar/Milk and of course the cream. We dipped the ice cream with the pandan cream and it was the perfect dessert that could be after a deliciously mouth watering dinner.
With this warmth note of lots of wishes for our anniversaries they gifted us their traditional souvenir The Black Elephant which is a lucky charm for them to us.
The service at Mekong is good too and as for the food, on the whole it is mostly very enjoyable. But it is really the space itself that gives you the wow feeling beautiful, colorful, original and ultimately, thoroughly Asian. It will steal your heart and stick in your memory for ever.
